Being fearless does not mean you're not scared of anything, but having the courage to do what you fear the greatest. Fear is such a strong emotion that makes you carry out in a certain way that I don't even explain. It seems like everyone has a fear of some kind, even the most fearless types of folks out there.
Understand how to be fearless
The way I see it, fear has only one intent, and that is to hold you back from achieving the things you want to carry out. Think about it. If a child gets spanked after doing something mean, he won't do it again because he is afraid of being spanked. He gets physically hurt and doesn't want to feel that same pain again.
The same perspective applies to adults, but in a psychological way. We are born in a society that is setup to form you and raise you a certain way. We develop thinking the way society wants us to think, doing the things society wants us to do, and we get used to it. We get used to going into debt to buy the things we think we need. We get used to sending people over seas to be killed while in the military. We get used to believing everything we see in the mainstream media. We get used to thinking we cannot do anything about it. We never learn to be fearless.
The gratification of being fearless
Many of times, we keep from doing or saying something out of fear of what others might think of us. We are scared to stand out and illuminate, so we get used to being in the background all the time. This is how we are raised.
We obey orders senselessly; that's the intention of public education. School teaches us how to grow up and be respectful citizens, which is fine. What I thought was interesting is how the purpose of elementary is to get you ready for middle school; the intention of middle school is to get you ready for high school. The intention of high school is to prepare you for college in order to get a great paying career. In my many years in school and college I have never been taught how to be fearless.
Different of us are scared to go against the system because of what others might say about us. I'm not saying don't go to school. I'm saying look at the world from a whole new angle. One thing that public education does not teach us is how to think for ourselves. We are fearful of trying almost anything new because our minds are so restricted by the time we matured into adults. You see, we were brought up to not get passed the 'what ifs'. Learning to be fearless can give you the valor to do what you want, regardless of what people say. When we try something new, our mind automatically starts to imagine the worst that could happen.
One thing I observed is how fear starts to creep up almost out of nowhere. Then before you know it, what used to be a huge destination is now nothing more than an entry at the bottom of your to-do list that you can't even find.
How to be fearless
When fear becomes an obstacle, learn to see it as an opportunity to develop. Learn to face your fears. Be the youngster that opens his closet door when he thinks there is a monster in there. Let me tell you what happens when you open that closet door. The monster will drop out of sight and you won't be afraid no more, because it's all in your head. That's what fearless is all about.
Life is all about taking risks. If you don't take a risk, you will never know what could've been. Don't think about it too much, just do it. Remember that you set your own limits.
