Like every tree stands on its own, reaching for the sky I stand alone. I share my world with no one else. All by myself, I stand alone.
This is a line from a song within the movie Quest for Camelot. It's a line that when I first started on my own quest to improve myself ran through my mind daily, sometimes hourly. And it had its uses. It gave me the courage to go on with what I needed to do even when everyone around me (and I mean everyone, friends, family, even neighbors I barely new) were telling me I would never reach my goal, never be more than what I was right then.
Sometimes it's necessary to stand on your own, to move forward despite everyone around you. The people you know and spend time with generally are going to be on the same level as you. When they see you're trying to improve yourself instead of joining you they try to pull you back to their level, causing as many difficulties for you as possible. Sometimes you have to step back, leave them where they are, and move on. You always are nice to them but you can't afford to let them hold you back.
Even though this is necessary it's still hard, and there is an even greater truth that will help you become a stronger person. I learned this truth as I progressed on my own journey.
No man is an island. We all live in the same world, breathe the same air. Our circumstances are different but we all affect each other. It's like the butterfly affect, you know that strange phenomenon where a butterfly flaps its wings setting in to effect chain events that cause a tornado half a world away.
Standing on your own is commendable to a certain extent, but when you start to realize you need other people you gain a whole new level of understanding. You can't go through life in complete solitude and expect to have the growth and improvement you want in your life. Humans are social creatures. We congregate together, live in family groups, and take care of each other. This is our strength.
The more time you spend with people you want to be like the more you will think and act like them. So if you really want to improve yourself make some new friends, and have those friends be people you want to be like, people that help and encourage you to be who you want to be. Spend your time with those people and your life won't just change, it will transform.
