The first step in your puppy training would be to teach him his name. This will create a nice bond between the two of you. Use their name often, and then teach them how to come to you when called. These are the commands your dog should learn before anything else. Spend plenty of quality time with them, so that they know that they can trust you. When you set this trust early on, the puppy will be more open to the next steps in training.

When you want to get your dog's attention, you should only call the dog by his or her name. One of the most important things when training your dog is to ensure that it always responds. Practice calling your dog's name and letting him respond at least tens times a day. Also, don't punish your dog if he comes over when you call him by name.

It's to be expected that your new puppy will likely have an accident now and then. Always clean up accidents right away to help with the training process and keeping the area sanitary. If the mess stays on the area for too long, it can leave a scent behind that your animal may return to in the future to do his business. Many products are sold that will neutralize these odors, so ask about them at your local pet store.

Get your dog comfortable with the types of actions it would experience at a vet exam. Gently place your hands over its body, acknowledging your dog when he responds positively. Get him accustomed to being poked at, having his paws examined and teeth inspected in a friendly manner. See if your friends can help, too.

Above all else, consistency is the key to effective dog training. Write down the specific commands you want to use with your dog, and get everyone in your household to review the list and use the same words. Only reward for good behavior. Bad behavior must have its own reaction. If the dog gets different responses from different people, he can get confused.

Challenge your dog frequently. Test the dog occasionally to check his memory, even though both of you know that he remembers his commands.

Good communication is the most vital component of dog training. Be consistent and clear when training your dog. Make sure your commands and body language are consistent, and that you reward and punish fairly. Don't ignore the things that your dog is telling you. He will let you know if he is having a good day or if he is feeling anxious and overworked.

Have frequent or as necessary mini-training sessions to reinforce and keep the rules fresh in your dog's mind. People think that just because their dog has been trained once, that is all they need. But dogs can become complacent just like their human counterparts. It is important that the training your dog receives is reinforced regularly.

Make sure that everybody in your household is uniform when it comes to issuing dog commands. If you use one command phrase and your family uses another then your dog may get confused. If everyone uses identical commands, the dog will learn much faster and you will have greater success.

Having a dog and keeping your house in good shape should not be mutually exclusive. You might not be able to have a presentable house if your dog is bad; try some training. Learn a few tips to training your dog and you can have a well-behaved dog in no time.
