Was Jesus Christ God? Biblical Confirmation That Jesus Christ Is Deity

Was Jesus Christ God? There are many distinctive religions around today that are concentrated around the very same book: The Bible. One of the most arguable topics of conversation when it comes to the Bible is whether or not Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God the Father, shares in the Divinity of the Father. While some would say he surely does, others say that Jesus is not God but rather a created being. People who assume or suppose this despise the concept of the Trinity and therefore must also assume or suppose that the Holy Spirit is not God either.

In speaking with people about the idea of the Trinity it seems as if there is a wide misunderstanding as to the true definition of the concept. Let us start by defining the trinity and then moving into the scriptures to bear out the idea that Jesus Christ is truly God.

The word "Trinity" itself is not found anyplace in the Bible. Instead it is a concept and a conclusion that is reached after reading scriptures relating to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and accepting the properties and powers that they share. Those who believe in the trinity believe that there is only one God, or being made up of three persons. Three persons, one being. Notice this is not suggesting three beings in one person.

There is a humongous difference, mainly that those who believe in the trinity are not polytheistic, but rater affirm a monotheistic view of one and only one God. The Son (Jesus) is NOT the Father, just as the Father is NOT the Son. As we can see throughout the bible, however, each of these persons has their own specific roles and purposes. It must also be noted that it is not automatically easy to comprehend such a concept, but the trinity is something that the Bible makes very absolute as it attributes each of the three persons of God as being equal, eternal, and fully God.

In the Old Testament book of Isaiah 7:14, we find a prediction of the child that the Lord will send. "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." Immanuel is translated word for word as "God with us."

Also in Isaiah 9:6 we find "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Notice that here Jesus is referred to as Mighty God. As we sustain that there is only one true God, this is moderately self explanatory.

God makes it very clear that we shall have no additional Gods before Him. Likewise, we shall not worship anything or anyone other than the one true God. Still, in Matthew 14:32-33 we see the disciples worshiping Jesus. "And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the canoe worshiped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God."

In John 20:28-29 we see Thomas calling Jesus his God. "And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." Some human beings actually try to argue that Thomas was saying this as an expression of amaze that Jesus had returned from the dead. This is absolutely laughable. If we look back to the Greek we see distinctively that Thomas was saying this TO Jesus. Also, we see Jesus bless Thomas for his faith, rather than contend his sayings. If Jesus were not God, he would be bound to refute Thomas for calling him his God.

Next we turn to Hebrews 1:6, where angels are commanded to honor Jesus. "And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him." It just does not get any more obvious than this.

In Philippians 2:6 we see that Jesus does not consider it a bad thing to be balanced with God. "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God." In Colossians 2:9 we find "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." John 1 tells us that in the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. And that the word became flesh and dwelt in association with us.

These are just a few of the greater verses suggesting that Jesus Christ is God. Once more we point out that Jesus is not the Father, but rather the Son. Jesus is one of the three co-equal co-eternal persons of the Trinity. There are too many verses to explain in this article, but I hope what is displayed here will lead you to conduct studies of your own and look further into the Bible and what it really teaches about the Father, the Son, and the Holy spirit. In the end we must receive that just because we can not fully fathom something the Bible says does not mean we can not receive it. If we claim to believe the Bible, we must believe all of it and not just bits and pieces.
