A harness will be more comfortable for you dog, although you will lose some of the control a collar will give you. Use a collar and a harness at the same time to make your dog understands that the harness means he must obey you as well.

You will want to get your dog ready early to go to the vet. Use a gentle pass of your hand along their body to let them know that they are being praised when they act correctly. Teach them to tolerate paw exams and dental checks. Consider asking your friends for help, as well.

If you have a knock-down, drag-out fight with your kids or reprimand another pet, your voice could impact your dog's training. Keep your interactions with your dog positive, especially if the dog has done nothing wrong.

Train your dog in little steps if what you want him to do is a bit more complicated. This includes tricks like training your dog to retrieve your newspaper. To start, he needs to master the art of holding an object. Then he should be taught to recognize that item by name. The next step is to teach him to pick the object up. And the final step is teaching the dog to bring the item to you. If you are able to break it down for you dog, they will begin to understand the relationship between all of the tasks that they need to do for a command.

Begin training your dog when it's still a young puppy. It's not absolutely necessary, but young dogs do better with training. If you train your dog when he is a puppy, then he will continue to be a good dog for the remainder of his life.

Learn how to give the dog positive reinforcement in training without using treats. Offering treats as rewards for learning new tricks or behavior can be effective. You most likely do not have treats available at any given time, especially when training is not in progress. It is important to also learn skills like praising, and physical affection to replace treats.

If you do not want your canine friend chewing up all your possessions when you are not home, just keep them outside. If it is too cold out, or you can't leave the puppy outdoors for some other reason, you will just have to do your best to make his favorite objects out of reach. Leave him in one room with the door closed, and leave him some toys that are okay to chew on.

It is crucial that everyone who interacts with your dog uses the exact same command phrases as you do. It's confusing to the dog when one person uses the phrase "get off" and someone else says "down boy" to mean the same thing. If all members of the family use the same commands, training your dog will be much more easier.

Don't allow your dogs to pick and choose what they listen to. If you don't feel like making time or having enough energy to give the dog a command, don't do it.

If bad behavior suddenly starts, take your dog to a vet to eliminate health problems as the cause. Animals that are in pain or that have certain health conditions may lash out or behave inappropriately. This is the only way they have of showing us that something is wrong, since they are not able to tell us what's bothering them.

Without proper training, dogs can be destructive in the home. If you follow the guidelines in this article, you will be more effective while training your dog.
