Pali is an industrial town located in the state of Rajasthan in the western part of India. Situated in the Marwar region, Pali lies on the banks of River Bandi, at a distance of about 72 km southeast of Jodhpur. Pali is popularly known as "The Industrial City".
The origin of Pali has been traced to the pre-historic age and geologists uphold the opinion that it had emerged from the western sea that was spread over a large part of the present day Rajasthan. It is believed that the great sage Javalli used to stay at Pali for meditation during the Vedic age. Pali finds mention in the epic Mahabharata as the place where the Pandavas rested during their exile. Pali was once a part of the ancient Arbuda Province and was known as Balla-Desh.
Formerly known as Pallika and Palli, Pali was a trade centre since the ancient times. Pali was ruled by various dynasties at various times. Pali was ruled by the Guhilas of Mewar, the Chauhans, Chalukyas, Songara Chauhans, The Rathor dynsasty and Pratihara kings, to name a few.
Pali has witnessed much bloodshed for power, especially during the 16th and 17th century. Pali had been a part of the Marwar kingdom until 1949, when the then Maharaja consented to join the newly independent India.
The major attractions in and around Pali include the Bangur Museum, Lakhotia Garden, Somnath Mandir and its numerous Baoris, to name a few.
The Bangur museum of Pali is home to a rich collection of ancient historical and artistic artifacts like dresses, coins and armors that are in typical Rajasthani style. Lakhotia Garden is a beautiful garden in the heart of Pali, housing a Shiva temple in its centre. The Somnath Mandir is a well known historical monument which was built in the year 1152 AD and is located near the Lakhotia Garden. It is also the oldest temple in Pali.
Pali is also known for its unique Baoris (stepwells). Each baori of Pali is unique in design and architecture, and presents a beautiful sight to behold.
Other places of tourist attraction in and around Pali are the Naulakha Jain temple, Radha Krishna Astrological House, Bajrang Bag, Karni Mata Temple, Hemavas Dam, Geeta Bhavan, Sai baba temple, Keshav bhawan (sangh karyalay), Maharana Pratap Smarak (Birth place of Rana Pratap) and Illogi Temple among others.
Pali is a famous hub of textile mills, specializing in the production and export of cotton and synthetic clothes and yarns. Maharaja Shree Umaid Mills here is the largest cotton mill of Rajasthan, which employs around 3000 workers.
Other industrial units include that of agriculture instruments, chemicals, cement, marble cutting and minerals among others.
Pali is well-connected with other important cities of Rajasthan.
