Originally known as Valna, Kausani is a hill town located in the state of Uttaranchal in the northern part of India in the foothills of Himalayan Ranges. Kausani is sited at an elevation of 1890 meters above sea level, in the district of Almora.
A beautiful hill station, Kausani is famous for the panoramic view of the Himalayas it offers. Kausani offers the view of many magnificent mountains like Trishul, Nandakot and Nanda Devi among others. Mahatma Gandhi was so very impressed by the beauty of Kausani that he called it the 'Switzerland of India'. True to its sobriquet, the landscape of Kausani resembles the landscape of Switzerland. As a result of its beauty, Kausani attracts tourists from all over the world.
Perched on the ridge between the dense pine forests, Kausani overlooks the Someshwar valley on one side and Garur and Baijnath Katyuri valley on its other side. In the ancient times, Kausani was a part of Almora District, under the administrative control of the Katyuri king, Baichaldeo. The king later donated a part of this land to a Gujarati Brahmin.
Kausani is home to many famous ashrams. Anashakti Ashram is one of the main historically important places in Kausani. Its historical relevance lies in the fact that Mahatma Gandhi had spent some days at this ashram, and had written a commentary on the Anashakti Yog from here. A tea estate in the initial days, the ashram now houses a research centre as well as a library. A memorial dedicated to a social activist, Sarlaben (Katherine Heileman), is also a famous tourist attraction of Kausani.
With a tea plantation extending to an area of 208 hectares, Kausani exports its tea to countries like Australia, Germany, Korea and the United States.
The Pant Museum of Kausani is named after the noted poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, who was born here. The museum serves as a reference library and is preserved in its original form even today. Another important place in Kausani is the Lakshmi Ashram, which is dedicated to the social welfare of Kumaoni women.
Kausani, a haven for the adventurous, offers a lot of opportunities for adventure sport activities like trekking, rock climbing and mountaineering among others. The Pindari Glacier Trek, Sunder Dhunga Trek and Milam Glacier Trek are among the most popular trekking areas of Kausani. Makar Sankranti, also called 'Uttarayani', is an important fair of Kausani that takes place at Bageshwar, a nearby destination.
Kausani is also well-known for its indigenous delicacies like bal mithai, singauri, madua ki roti and sisunak saag, which are the specialties of this region.
Kausani is well-connected to other parts of the country by road and rail. The best time to visit Kausani is from September to May.
