Dental assistant jobs are meant for those people, who are willing to work along with a dentist and who are willing to interact with various clients. The training required for this job is minimal. These jobs are hitting the popularity charts of late as more dentists are looking out for assistants that could help them out with drilling cavities and carrying out some other minor dental activity. Dental assistants and dental hygienists are different and the job of an assistant is not as technical, when compared to a dental hygienist.

The job description of a dental assistant is not standard and it would change according to the place, where the assistant is working and it also depends upon the dentist with whom the assistant is working. In short, the work of an assistant can be divided into three major categories: patient care, laboratory, and office duties. In the patient care department, the assistant would be responsible for preparing the patient for the procedure with the dentist, and it would also include getting the right tools and equipment for the dentist. Some of the office duties that an assistant would be taking care of are taking phone calls from prospective customers, ordering supplies, and sending invoices. In the laboratory duties category, the assistant would be responsible for cleaning the equipments and taking impressions of the patient's teeth.

There is very little-to-zero training required for a dental assistant job. In fact, most of the training for the dental assistant happens on the job, or when the assistant starts working with the dentist in the clinic. There are some community colleges that are offering training in dental assistant jobs. Such training options are becoming popular among the student community as it helps in building the skills required for the job before getting into the workforce. The training program would usually last a year and the student would be awarded a diploma or certificate of completion at the end of the program. Depending on the state requirements, students would also be at times required to sit for some license exams.

As far as the demand for dentist assistants are concerned, it is expected to grow up rapidly in the coming future, and that is going to be the case with the salary aspect as well. For an individual to succeed as a dental assistant, manual skills and the willingness to interact with people is a must.
