    Patna, the capital city of the state of Bihar is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga. The city of Patna is famed for being the site of the longest bridge in the world situated over the river Ganges called the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. The main river Ganga is joined by four other rivers in Patna namely, Ghaghara, Gandak, Punpun and Sone. Patna, formerly called Pataligrama, was fortified by the Magadha King Ajathashatru in 493 BC. The village was later developed into a town by the king's son Udayi and named Pataliputra. The region has been ruled by several dynasties, the Mauryan empire being the most important since it was under them that region saw the dawn of development. Pataliputra, which was once a great educational and cultural hub during the Mauryan empire, is said to have become so prominent, largely by the efforts of the great kings Chandragupta Maurya and Asoka. The city was so renowned worldwide that it was visited by many famous foreign travellers like Megasthenes and Fa Hien who have mentioned Pataliputra in many of their writings. Patna has numerous tourist attractions that include religious places, historical monuments and archaeological sites. Among the major tourist attractions in Patna are Khuda Baksh Oriental Library, Patna Museum, Golgarh, the Patna Cemetery, Padri-Ki-Haveli, Har Mandir, Agam Kuan and a host of others. Agam Kuan is a much visited ancient well that dates back to the reign of Ashoka. Another popularly visited site is the Patna Museum or the Jadu Ghar that houses many ancient artifacts from the Gupta and Mauryan dynasties. Other museums in the region include the Karpoori Thakur Museum, Jalan Museum, Folk Art Museum, Rajendra Smriti Sangrahalaya and Bihar Police Museum. Patna is also famous as the birthplace of many Sikh gurus. The Takht Sri Patna Sahib or the Gurudwara Patna Sahib an important religious centre of Patna. Built in the memory of the 10th guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, it is one of the most revered places of worship for the Sikh. Other religious sites include Meetan Ghat, Mangal Talab, Begu Hajjam's Mosque, Phulwari Sharif and Patthar Ki Masjid. Indira Gandhi Planetarium is one of the largest planetariums in Asia and is a popular destination. Sanjay Gandhi Botanical and Zoological Garden, Gandhi Maidan, Mahatma Gandhi Setu, Golghar, Martyr's Memorial and Old Opium Warehouse are other interesting places to visit. One of the oldest universities of the world, Nalanda is also close by. Patna is best visited during the months between October and February when the weather is most pleasant. Well equipped with airport and many major railway stations, Patna is well connected by rail, road and air to all major cities in the country.
  • Pelling – Mountain View By:-Flin Peterson
    Pelling is a hill station located in the mountain state of Sikkim. Located at an altitude of about 2150 m, Pelling is more famous for its mighty snow capped mountains of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga and has a quieter and serene atmosphere than the more bustling state capital of Gangtok. Pelling is about 125 km from Gangtok. Pelling promises a breathtaking view of the Kanchenjunga range, comprising of peaks like Koktang, Pandim, Kabru, Kumbhakarna, Narsing and Siniolchu. Sango-Choling monastery is located on the top of a hill, 3 km from Pelling. The walk takes you through some beautiful pine forests and some open green plateau. This monastery is Sikkim's second largest monastery. There is a small graveyard attached to the complex with prayer flags fluttering all over. From the top, the Pelling town and the surrounding mountains can be seen. A few minutes' walk from Pelling will take you to Pemayangtse, one of the most revered and important monasteries of Sikkim. A lot of monks reside in the complex and tourists can also stay in an adjoining lodge if booked in advance. The monastery holds numerous ancient scriptures, priceless antiques and a beautiful wooden sculpture of the celestial palace of Sangthokpalri. Khechepalri Lake, 34 km from Pelling, is considered to be one of the most sacred lakes of Sikkim. The lake remains hidden in the rich forest cover and is believed to have taken the shape of Buddha's foot. An annual fair during the March/April months attract a lot of pilgrims as well as tourists. The royal capital of Sikkim was at the now in ruins Rabdentse. Rabdentse was the second capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Sikkim after Yuksam, and till the year 1814, the king of Sikkim had ruled the state from this place. Today, the Rabdentse ruins lie hidden from the main road and are reached by a small hike through the forests. A small archaeological museum houses a lot of ancient artefacts. Pelling also forms the base from where trekkers and mountain climbers undertake the treks to various places in West Sikkim. The treks to Yuksom and Tashiding can be conducted from Pelling. Pelling is an ideal choice for a more relaxed holiday where you can go for long walks or simply enjoy the sunrise without the normal bustle of a hill station. The helipad at Pelling gives you a 270 degree view of the mountains and the valley. Singshore Bridge which is a 200 m high suspension bridge is a modern structure that is worth a view. The nearest airport from Pelling is Bagdogra Airport near Siliguri.The nearest railway stations from Pelling are New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri. Private vehicles are available for passengers travelling from Pelling to the neighbouring cities.
